Running a small business means multi-tasking to the max, and often your passenger vehicle can only do so much. Whether you’re a tradie hauling gear across town, a florist preparing for a wedding or an online store owner drowning in delivery boxes, there’s a point where your hatchback just isn’t going to cut it anymore.
That’s where a rented van or truck earns its keep. Instead of dropping hard earned dough into a vehicle you might only need a few days; hiring gives small businesses the flexibility to scale transport up or down as work demands, without the paperwork behind ownership. Our moving vans & 3T moving truck are available to hire on a full standard Australian licence, there’s nothing holding you back!
Big Jobs -> Small Business
It’s easy to think of moving trucks as a once-in-a-decade, moving house type of vehicle. Your small business just got the upgrade it deserves.
- Stock runs and bulk deliveries – collecting inventory from suppliers or getting large orders out to customers in a singular trip, compared to 5
- Market and event set-ups – markets, pop-ups, trade shows and expos all mean hauling stock, stands, and equipment. Make it easy on yourself to load up your gear.
- Trade and construction work – easily transport all your tools, materials and equipment moving between job sites
- Do it Yourself – add removalists to the small business checklist! Get your crew together to help you out rather than paying for removalists
- Seasonal surges – your stock will fluctuate with busy and quieter seasons. No need to commit to a vehicle you don’t need for the other ten months of the year.
The appeal is simple: pay for the vehicle only when the job calls for it, then hand back the keys.

Hiring a Truck with Just a Standard Licence
Do you need a special licence to drive a SIXT moving truck? The good news: no
Trucks up to 4.5 tonnes can be driven on a standard car licence. That covers the vast majority of small business moves, from stock runs to office relocations, without any extra licencing paperwork.
So, for most small businesses, hiring a van or truck is no more complicated than hiring a car, just a bigger boot.
For an Australian standard licence, you must have a full unrestricted licence to hire any SIXT vehicle. For an International Driver Permit (IDP), the permit must state that the holder can drive that vehicle class.
Find Your Perfect Match
Picking the right size vehicle comes down to what you’re moving and how often. A good rule of thumb:
- Pick up vans and utes – ideal for smaller loads: a few boxes of stock, market stall equipment, or tools and materials for a single tradie.
- Medium Van – a solid step up for bulkier deliveries, small fit-outs, or stock runs that would otherwise take multiple trips.
- 3-tonne truck – holds 18 cubic metres of furniture or stock, more helpful to transport bigger goods
- 4.5-tonne truck – the biggest SIXT truck we offer available to rent on a standard car licence. Perfect to help move office spaces, small houses, or large equipment
Additionally, SIXT has trucks with the option of hydraulic and refrigerated trucks, helping to cater to all small business needs.
Accessories for your moving truck rental
There’s a lot that goes into moving, and it’s easy for things to fall off the to-do list. We can offer moving accessories for hire or sale that you can enjoy when you hire a moving van at most locations around the country, including:
- Packing boxes
- Packing tape
- Ropes
- Stair climbing trolleys
- Blankets for furniture moving
These options are not available at all locations, so make sure you contact the branch to see what extras you can get with your commercial vehicle.
Why Renting Beats Buying
For a small business, the commitment and money spent on a dedicated truck rarely makes sense unless you need one every single day. Renting means:
- No maintenance or depreciation costs to budget for
- The right vehicle for the right job, rather than one van trying to do everything
- Flexibility to scale up during busy periods and scale back down when things are quiet
- Locations across major Australian cities, trucks and vans are easily accessible.
Next time your business needs to move more than your car can handle, it might be worth checking what’s parked at your nearest SIXT rental branch, chances are, there’s a van or truck sized just right for the job.
