With noticeably less traffic than the coastal routes, this is as much about the scenic drive itself as it is the destination.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle: The Weekend Escape That Doesn’t Feel Like One<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle is renowned as one of the best weekend getaways from Sydney. Walk the Bathers Way coastal trail, snap a photo at Nobbys Lighthouse, then head to Darby Street for some of the best food and coffee north of Sydney. Hunter Valley delivers winery tastings, gourmet restaurants, and enough cheese and chocolate stops to make the drive back a little more relaxed than the drive up. The vineyard scenery is at its best through winter and spring, so plan accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Port Stephens: Worth the Extra Hour<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The longest drive on this list, but also one of the most rewarding. Nelson Bay makes a great base, the Tomaree Head Summit walk delivers some genuinely spectacular views, and the sand dunes at Stockton Beach are unlike anything else on this coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
