The direct route from Sydney to Wollongong<\/a> is around 85 kilometres long and takes about 90 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an easy drive, if you\u2019re keen to head straight to Wollongong for a weekender. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, for a more interesting adventure, turn your next journey from Sydney to Wollongong into a road trip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are loads of reasons to stop along the way \u2013 from the natural wonders of the Royal National Park to the beautiful beaches of Wollongong\u2019s northern neighbourhoods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

STOP ONE: WATTAMOLLA BEACH<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head south of Sydney along the A1 until you get to Loftus, then turn left onto Farnell Avenue to drive into the Royal National Park. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within minutes, you\u2019ll be surrounded by forest and blue sky, and feel as though you\u2019re a million miles away from the city. There\u2019s so much to explore \u2013 from secluded beaches to winding walking trails to tranquil waterfalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make your first stop Wattamolla Beach, famous for its waterfall, which plunges into a deep lagoon. The still water is ideal for kids keen to swim, snorkel and float about on lilos, while the well-protected beach offers small waves and good fishing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

STOP TWO: OTFORD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continue south through the national park for another 25 minutes to reach the tiny village of Otford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re passing through on a weekend, make your first stop the Otford Pantry, where you can tuck into a hearty slice of house-made apple pie with cream or ice cream (or both). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, you could follow the walking trail downhill to Bulgo Beach, which takes about 25 minutes. Cool off in the sea, or the ocean pool, and wander around the fishing shack village, which feels a bit like stepping back in time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On your way out of Otford, swing by Otford Farm Horse Riding for a trail ride, or stop at Bald Hill Lookout for incredible coastal views. You might even catch some hang gliders taking off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STOP THREE: SEA CLIFF BRIDGE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 minutes\u2019 drive south of Otford, you\u2019ll come across the Sea Cliff Bridge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feat of engineering, built in December 2005, follows the cliff line for 665 glorious metres, affording spectacular views all the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s parking at the northern end, so you can jump out and walk along the bridge, which gives you plenty of time to soak up the scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STOP FOUR: SCARBOROUGH HOTEL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a few more kilometres, you\u2019ll see the Scarborough Hotel on your left. Built in 1886, this pub has an expansive beer garden with magical views towards Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Settle in for generous seafood platters, refreshing salads and hearty mains, like snapper and prawn pie, 7+ wagyu rump and twice-cooked pork belly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STOP FIVE: THIRROUL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carry on south for 10 minutes, and you\u2019ll find yourself in Thirroul. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with a swim at Thirroul Beach, which gives you a kilometre of sand to enjoy. Lifesavers are on duty from September to April, plus there\u2019s an ocean pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterwards, wander up to town for a drink or bite. Try Black Market for good coffee, South Sailor for excellent fish and chips, Pickled Poet for a relaxing glass of wine, and Ciro\u2019s for tasty pizza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GETTING TO SYDNEY AND WOLLONGONG<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sydney<\/a> is a nine-hour drive north of Melbourne, and Wollongong a 90-minute drive south of Sydney.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re travelling from another city or country, and you\u2019re keen to get on the road as soon as possible, then fly into Sydney Airport<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
