5 Safe Swimming Beaches for Kids on the Road from Sydney to Brisbane

When you’re on the road with kids, there’s no better way to break up the journey than with a swim. But finding beaches that are safe – with still water, gentle waves or regular patrols – isn’t always easy.

Here are five between Sydney and Brisbane where the whole family can take a refreshing dip. You might even be tempted to stay the night, so you can do it all again in the morning.

NELSON BAY BEACH, PORT STEPHENS

Make your first stop Nelson Bay Beach in Port Stephens, which is two hours’ drive north of Sydney.

This tranquil bay is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Lucky visitors might even spot one or two of Port Stephens’ local dolphins – more than 100 live in the area. If you’re visiting between May and November, then consider taking the family on a whale-watching cruise.

It’s a short stroll to Nelson Bay village, where you’ll find interesting shops, good cafes, and, most importantly, excellent fish and chip shops.

PARK BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR

Another three hours’ drive north will land you in Coffs Harbour.

One of the most popular swimming spots for littlies is Park Beach. Whenever you travel, you can count on lifesavers being around – they patrol seven days a week, all-year-round.

While you’re in Coffs Harbour, find out why it’s NSW first official eco-destination, and be sure to try these five unexpected experiences. Visiting a turtle hospital is bound to be a hit with the kids.

WHITING BEACH, YAMBA

One of the best things about driving north is that, the further you go, the warmer the water is.

Once you hit Yamba, which is three hours’ drive from Coffs Harbour, you can expect super-comfy temperatures when you dive in.

There are several beautiful beaches in and around town, including the legendary Angourie Point surf break.

But, for kids, the most sheltered spot is Whiting Beach, which is on the Clarence River, beyond the reach of pounding surf. Plus, lifesavers are on patrol during summer.

CLARKES BEACH, BYRON BAY

From Yamba, it’s a 90-minute drive to Byron Bay, the easternmost point of the Australian mainland.

One of the safest spots for kids to swim here is Clarkes Beach, which is at the south end of Main Beach.

It’s not usually patrolled, but it’s very well protected from big swell and strong winds. There’s a gentle, rolling wave, which is perfect for kids who are learning to surf.

A carpark, playground, toilets, barbecues and picnic tables are all nearby. Plus, it’s just a few minutes’ drive into Byron Bay.

TALLEBUDGERA CREEK INLET, GOLD COAST

With more than 70 kilometres of coastline, the Gold Coast has plenty of family-friendly beaches.

One of the calmest is Tallebudgera Creek Inlet, which is an hour’s drive from Byron Bay.

In this stunning spot, you’ll be taking a dip in crystal clear waters, while enjoying the safety of lifesaving patrols. There’s also a kids’ playground, kiosk and cafe.

If you’re looking for other ways to entertain the family in the area, then check out our guide to spending the weekend on the Gold Coast with kids.

GETTING FROM SYDNEY TO BRISBANE

Brisbane is a ten hour drive north of Sydney. If you’re travelling to either city from somewhere else, then consider flying to Brisbane Airport or Sydney Airport.

In both airports, you can pick up a SIXT car rental – be it a spacious, comfortable SUV or an eco-friendly electric vehicle. Plus, customise your car hire with optional extras, such as child seats, GPS units and prepaid fuel.
