The Goldie got it! Gold Coast to host 2018 Commonwealth Games

We’ve done it before and we’ve done it again. An Aussie city has been crowned the host of the next Commonwealth Games.

Commencing on the 4th of April, 2018, the Queensland city of the Gold Coast will play host for 11 action-packed days of sports and competition.

This is the fifth time in the history of the Commonwealth Games that Australia will host the event that rolls around every four years. Strictly for member countries of the Commonwealth, the winning bid to host the Games was won by the Gold Coast by a landslide. Announced back in 2011, it’s given the city enough time to plan and build infrastructure to house the 71 competing countries and territories athletes and crews – not to mention the multitude of spectators the event will bring to Queensland’s sunny shores.

The city really is the ultimate Australian city to host the event, with a predictable and temperate climate visitors love. Athletes will compete across 18 different disciplines, with beach volleyball the final sport to be added to the list in March, 2016. It’s the first time the sport has been included in the competition and is just another opportunity for the Goldie to showcase its beautiful beaches to millions of viewers all over the world.

When a city hosts the Olympic or Commonwealth Games it does great things for tourism within that country, and with Australia already such a popular destination for travellers from all over the world, the Gold Coast is the ultimate smaller-sized city to put on the international map.

The official Gold Coast 2018 website features a counter that pinpoints the days, hours and minutes until the Games begin. Maybe an upcoming break to check out this epic city is just the trick to ease your itching travel bug?
