4 ways to experience art & culture in Tasmania

Tasmania’s isolation means that many Aussies haven’t yet ticked this dreamy destination off their travel lists, and it also means that it has sprouted a unique arts scene and culture all of its own.

Of course, the island state is known for its phenomenal scenery and bushwalking adventures, but if you’d like to add some cultural stops to your Tasmanian road trip, this list is for you.

Here are four ways to experience art and culture with your car hire in Tasmania.

1. Visit Mona Tasmania

The Museum of Old and New Art is located just outside of Hobart, and is not your regular art gallery or museum. Here, you can check out David Walsh’s private collection of art and antiquities, and also pay a visit to the Moorilla Winery to try a few wines. There’s also Moo Brew (a brewery), a cafe, bars, and a restaurant, so Mona is as much a destination as it is a museum.

There are two festivals held throughout the year – one in January and one in June – that celebrate art, music, food, and more, so double check if you’ll be in town during these events.

2. Attend Festivale

Festival is a weekend-long celebration of all things Tasmania, including arts, performances, and wine.

Head along during the second weekend in February to make your way through over 70 stalls and taste all the fare on offer, such as ciders, whiskeys, wines, and beers. You can also watch the outdoor theatre performances, and interact with the roving buskers.

This vibrant festival is a great example of what Tasmania has to offer and can get quite busy, so book your Launceston car hire ahead of time.

3. Explore the Queen Victoria Museum

The Queen Victoria Museum is the largest museum in Australia not found in a capital city, so there’s sure to be something everyone can enjoy – especially on a rainy day.

You’ll find it in the heart of Launceston, where it’s brimming with Australian art from colonial times, natural science exhibits, Tasmanian history, and a lot more. It has everything from shipwrecks to dinosaurs, so set aside plenty of time to see it all.

4. Discover Kooper

A much lesser-known attraction is the outdoor sculpture gallery of Folko Kooper, a garden and studio located on a historic Georgian property in Mangalore. This small town is roughly half an hour north of the capital with your Hobart car hire.

Set on an idyllic landscape of several acres and an 1830s stone home, you’ll walk amongst beautiful gardens and discover custom sculptures made in glass, stone, bronze, and steel.

All works are completed by duo Folko Kooper and Maureen Craig, who have been featured in the Melbourne International Flower & Garden show every year for more than two decades. Plus, if you love something you see or find yourself inspired, you can order a custom piece of art for your own backyard.

When you rent a car in Tasmania, you’ll be free to explore all the cultural events and artistic attractions on the island. Be sure to visit the Sixt magazine for more inspiration for your road trip!
