7 FREE places to watch fireworks in Sydney (and elsewhere) on New Year’s Eve

It’s that special time of year when everyone is geared up and ready to begin 2024 with a spring in their step and their New Year’s resolutions firmly intact.

So, where to bring in the New Year? It’s safe to say that Sydney puts on the grandest fireworks display down under. Plus, it’s one of the first cities in the world to enter 2024, which is something everyone should experience at least once in their lives.

We’ve picked out the best vantage spots – and don’t worry about cover charges, exorbitant drinks prices, and overpriced gigs – these spots are completely free and perfect for the whole family. And for those of you in other states, we’ve got you covered too!

Where to watch New Years fireworks in Sydney

Mrs Macquaries Point

The festivities kick off at 10 am in the tip of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Sydney. With epic views of the fireworks, there’s room for 14,000 people to welcome in the New Year, so it’s bound to be fun. There are a few restrictions: no glass, no camping, no sunshades, no portable chairs, no pass-outs, no pets, and no busking. Got that? No problem!

Bradfield Park

Perfect for families, this vantage point offers views of the eastern and western sides of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Food will be available for purchase, but alcohol is prohibited. Although the capacity is 35,000, arrive early to secure a good view!

Sydney Park

If you are less worried about seeing the fireworks up close, but more interested in a relaxed and spacious atmosphere away from the crowds, then head to Sydney Park near St. Peters and Erskineville. This expansive park has a nice, quiet hill facing the city, where you can see the fireworks on the harbour in the distance. It’s a very chill environment, with families and groups gathered on blankets, listening to music, munching delicious food, and welcoming the new year in a calmer way than some other parts of the city.

Need a hire a car in Sydney to scope out your spot? Choose from Thrifty’s extensive range of vehicles to suit your needs and style preferences.

Where to watch New Years fireworks in Melbourne

Treasury Gardens

The East Melbourne gardens are the ideal spot for a New Year’s picnic. Bring a blanket and some snacks, and perch up on the lush green grass to take in some of the most exquisite views of the Melbourne skyline that will light up with a dazzling firework display!

Where to watch New Years fireworks in Brisbane

Kangaroo Point Cliffs

You’ll be so close to the action here the fireworks will take your breath away. Getting there will require a short walk, but it will be worth it (ladies, ditch the heels). Food and drinks will be for sale, but the fun vibes are all free!

Where to watch New Years fireworks in Perth

Northbridge, Perth

Perth comes alive at Northbridge’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. Interactive shows, percussion and African drumming, street performances, and a spectacular midnight countdown (as well as one at 9pm) are just a taste of what to expect.

Where to watch New Years fireworks in Adelaide

Elder Park

Adelaide’s biggest New Year’s Eve party is certainly set to deliver! Live music, kids’ entertainment, food, drinks, and show-stopping fireworks offer a celebration for all ages! The party starts at 6pm, with fireworks at both 9pm and midnight.

Wherever you decide to bring in 2024, we hope it’s with friends and loved ones. Drive safely and stay safe. We’ll see you on the other side!
