Travel Tips & News from SIXT Rent a Car

Choosing the Right Wheels for the Australian Outback

So, you’re thinking about heading outback. Endless horizons, red roads for days, and a chance to experience authentic Australian life. But before you point the bonnet toward outback, there’s one decision that matters more than your playlist: what you’re actually driving.

Did you know that 70% of Australia is technically outback? That’s 70% of Australia that is open for exploration. If you’re worried that your family hatchback might not be suitable for the Aussie outback, renting is the way to go.

Built for the Bush: What to Look For

Not every vehicle is cut out for outback touring, and it’s not just about ground clearance. A few things worth prioritising:

  • 4WD or all-wheel drive capability – unsealed roads, gravel, and unpredictable surfaces call for a vehicle that can handle more than just the highway.
  • Reliability and safety ratings – you’re often a long way from the nearest mechanic, so a well-maintained vehicle with strong safety credentials isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s essential.
  • Towing capacity – if you’re bringing a camper trailer or boat along for the ride, make sure the vehicle is rated to handle it.
  • Comfort for the long haul – outback distances are no joke. A comfortable cabin makes the eight-hour stretches between towns far more bearable.

SIXT’s 4WD range covers everything from more fuel efficient or roomier fleet options, offering flexibility depending on how remote you’re planning to go and how much gear is coming with you. You can hit the road with 5 star ANCAP safety ratings, 24-hour roadside assistance, towing capability, and an extensive range of mining accessories available at select locations. Offering more than a standard SUV, whatever it is you need with your 4×4 car hire, we have you covered.

Expect the Unexpected: Outback Hazards to Watch For

The outback is beautiful, but unlike the city, it plays by its own rules. Before you head off the beaten track, keep these hazards front of mind:

  • Wildlife on the road – kangaroos, wombats and livestock have a habit of appearing without warning, especially around dawn and dusk. Stay cautious and alert when the sun is down and use high beams if needed.
  • Extreme heat – outback temperatures can climb well beyond what your car (or your body) is used to. Overheating engines, dehydration and heat stress are all real risks on long, exposed stretches.
  • Road trains – freight vehicles are far longer than they look from a distance and take a lot more room and time to overtake safely.
  • Unsealed and dirt roads – gravel, dust and washouts can catch drivers used to sealed suburban streets. Reduced speed and a firm grip are the order of the day.
  • Limited fuel and phone reception – services between outback towns can be hundreds of kilometres apart, and mobile coverage often disappears entirely. Make sure to plan fuel stops accordingly and download maps to help you when signals get low.
  • Flooded creek crossings – even a dry-looking creek bed can turn into a genuine hazard after rain further upstream. Never assume a crossing is safe just because the sky above you are clear.
  • Sun glare and long straight roads – hours of unchanging scenery can be surprisingly fatiguing. Instead of getting a case of ‘white line fever’, make sure to take regular breaks.

A little preparation goes a long way: pack extra water, check road conditions before you set off, and let someone know your route if you’re heading somewhere remote.

Premium, Your Way

Outback touring doesn’t mean roughing it on the comfort front. SIXT’s premium fleet gives you a few different ways to make the journey as enjoyable as the destination:

  • Premium SUVs and 4WDs – think BMW X3, offering the ruggedness of an SUV with genuine luxury trimmings for those longer regional stretches.
  • Luxury sedans – Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot models bring comfort and prestige for travellers who want a touch of indulgence along the way.
  • Electric premium options – Tesla is part of SIXT’s premium range for those wanting a high-tech, low-emission way to travel (best suited to routes with reliable charging access).

Whichever you choose, protection packages are worth considering for any outback journey — remote roads and unpredictable wildlife are exactly the kind of variables peace of mind is made for.

The outback rewards those who come prepared. Pick the right vehicle, respect the conditions, and there’s a whole lot of red dirt and open sky waiting to be explored.
