The charging time for an electric vehicle depends on the type of charger you use. Charging at home with a standard wall socket is the slowest method, but you can typically expect your EV to reach a full charge overnight. Using a public DC fast charger, available at many locations across Australia, can provide about 80% charge in roughly 30 minutes.
Charging locations are best found using the Plugshare app. Remember to look for Chargefox chargers to enjoy free charging when you rent with SIXT.
The range of an electric car can be influenced by several factors. Speed is a significant factor; driving at high speeds, such as on motorways, increases energy consumption and reduces range, while urban driving at lower speeds with frequent stops generally results in lower consumption and a longer range. Weather conditions also play a role, as the battery performs best at around 20°C (68°F). In colder weather, additional energy is used to heat both the battery and the vehicle's interior, which can decrease range. Additionally, driving style affects range; while electric cars are known for their rapid throttle response and enjoyable performance, smooth acceleration and effective use of regenerative braking are key to achieving the maximum range.

SIXT has teamed up with Chargefox, Australia's biggest network for electric vehicle charging. This means if you rent an EV from us, you'll get free access to Chargefox's charging stations, making it super easy to plan your road trips without worrying about running out of juice.
We're all about going green and are leading the way with one of the largest EV fleets in Australia.
Until recently, one of the biggest limitations of electric cars was range. Now, in Australia, you can access electric cars that can travel more than 500km on a single charge. Because most Australians live in cities and have an average daily commute of around 35km, EVs have more than enough range for the vast majority of users without needing to recharge.
This varies depending on the type of car and charger. Plugging in at home using a regular wall socket is the slowest method, but an EV will reach full charge overnight. A public DC fast charger, however, can provide most EVs with 80 per cent capacity in around 30 minutes.
Range anxiety refers to a driver’s concern that they won’t have enough charge to get home or to the next charging station. With better batteries delivering increased range and more public electric chargers being installed, this is becoming less of a problem.
We recommend downloading the Chargefox app which lists the free chargers available for SIXT EV renters. There are also a range of free websites and apps including PlugShare that can be used to find alternative public charging stations near you. www.plugshare.com
Electric cars can be very fast as their torque is delivered almost instantly. Way back in 1899, an electric car broke the 100km/h speed barrier with a top speed of 105km/h. Today, the Hyundai Kona EV can accelerate as fast as its turbo-petrol equivalent, and the Tesla Model S can do 0-100km/h in 2.5 seconds – much faster than most supercars.
You should typically allow for around 5-6km per kWh of charge. As with internal combustion engine vehicles, efficiency depends on driving behaviour and conditions. Please refer to your vehicle's documentation for more specific information
SIXT customers will not pay for any charging done on the NRMA or Chargefox network. For any other network, please check the prices, on that network’s app or in Plugshare app. If a SIXT customer uses these networks, they are responsible for the charge.
Yes in most cases you will. This is called an idle fee. You are encouraged to unplug and move the vehicle from its charging space once you are charged, to allow for another use to access. Idle fees will be listed in the charging information in the Plugshare app.
An EV drives just like a normal car, only powered by electricity in the form of the battery. At SIXT, we understand there is some anxiety around driving something new, so we supply handy ‘how-to’ guides for every EV model. They cover all the basics for driving and charging so you can be on your way with ease and have a comfortable experience.
More information about driving an EV can be found on SIXT Magazine.
There are numerous factors that impact an electric vehicle’s charge and how quickly that level drops. Spirited driving will go through charge much faster than calm driving much the same as a petrol vehicle. Drivers will also find that the use of air conditioning and other electronic functions cause the battery level to lower a bit faster.
It’s also worth noting that driving in colder weather (around zero degrees) can cause an EV battery to drop in range.
With some planning and topping up your vehicle, this should be avoided. If however, you do run out of charge you can call roadside assistance on 1800 811 506 and they will organise for you to be towed to the nearest charging station.
We recommend topping the vehicle up rather than waiting until it is near zero charge. With this method you won’t be waiting as long to charge and can enjoy a stress-free journey. Make the most of short charge periods by having a snack, doing some shopping or stretching the legs while your car is charging. We also suggest charging the vehicle overnight where possible, so you can walk up to a fully charged car.
No. Currently the Tesla app is for vehicle owners only and not available for renters.
