Vientiane

On the banks of the Mekong River, just across from the border with Thailand is Vientiane, the capital of Laos. An old city, dating back to at least the 14th century, it's a quiet place which has become a firm favourite among backpackers on the South East Asian trail. Public transport here can be difficult to understand and hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore this lovely city and the beautiful surrounding countryside. For a little rest and relaxation, head over to Wat Sok Pa Luang, where you can relax in a rustic herbal sauna and experience traditional Lao massage. The Lao National Museum is definitely worth a visit. It's an interesting account of Lao history, told from the ruling Communist Party's perspective.
